Northshire Bookstore has reopened its main floor and hopes to reopen the second floor, which remains closed for repair, “as soon as possible.” The children’s book section is on the second floor, and staff have moved some items from upstairs to the main floor. The store closed on July 4 after water leaked from an upstairs apartment into the store. It affected the second floor much more than the first.

Children’s books that would normally be upstairs at Northshire Bookstore in Saratoga Springs are now found on the main floor. The main floor of the bookstore reopened after a leak in an upper floor of the building at 424 Broadway on July 4 shut down the entire operation.

“The community has been so beautiful,” said Nancy Scheemaker, the manager of the store at 424 Broadway, when the doors reopened at 10 a.m. July 31. She was speaking to a small group of people, mainly from the Saratoga County Chamber and the Saratoga Springs Business Improvement District.

Scott Austin, the chief operating officer of the company, said they were “elated” to reopen.

“We welcome back our loyal customers and first-time visitors alike, and thank everyone again for their patience these past few weeks while we worked around the clock to mitigate water damage caused by a unit in the floors above us,” Austin wrote in an email to the Dispatch. “We are pleased to say that remediation efforts were successful and the environment has been tested and deemed safe for our staff and customers to occupy, browse and shop.”

The store had significant losses to its book and gift inventory, but that has been cleared away and the staff have inspected all items currently in our store to ensure they are in brand new condition, Austin wrote.

Since July 4, the store has kept active with curbside pick up and online sales.

The main floor of the bookstore looks much the same, and missing or wanted children’s books may still be available, and the staff can work with customers who are looking for a specific title.

“Books are still available and we have lots of gifts,” Scheemaker told the group, adding later.

Just a few minutes after 10 a.m. the store had already begun to fill.
