Voluntary water restrictions remain

The Department of Public Works is asking residents to reduce their outdoor watering when using automatic systems. The restriction began Aug. 12. There are no restrictions for outdoor watering with hand-held devices for gardens, plants, trees, or shrubs. DPW is asking people to set their systems to this schedule:

  • Odd numbered houses water landscaping during odd calendar days (House number 219 waters on August 13, 15, 17, 19, etc.)

  • Even numbered houses water landscaping during even calendar days (House number 110 waters on August 12, 14, 16, 18, etc.)

  • No watering from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to evaporation rates (can represent a loss of up to 30%)

Judges back ban on courthouse captures

Eight former judges filed a “friend of the court brief” supporting a New York state law that prohibits federal immigration agents from conducting “removal operations” at courthouses for civil immigration violations, the Times Union is reporting. The U.S. Department of Justice brought a lawsuit to have the law dismissed. The brief from the judges — including former Court of Appeals Chief Judge Janet DiFiore — says that the detentions by ICE and federal agents is terribly disruptive to the court system and justice generally. The lawsuit by the Justice Department says that the state law runs afoul of many federal laws including the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Sacandaga Lake Center

Fulton County leaders have to fill a budget gap in order to create the Great Sacandaga Lake Discovery Center, a story in the Adirondack Explorer says. The planned center for just outside the village of Northville, stalled after officials opened four bids for discovery center construction June 25 to find that the original estimated of $1.2 million, grew to $8.4 million, the story says. Leaders are pursuing grants and other opportunities to fill the gaps.
