Road, utility work under Plaza starts Weds.

The South Mall Arterial underneath the Empire State Plaza is getting long-needed repairs, but that will mean detours and delays for local travelers, the Times Union is reporting. In the first phase of the multiyear repair project, road work will replace expansion gaps on the surface while crews work to fix the utility system underground. Read the full story in the Times Union here to find out if your commute or parking plan is affected. Work starts Wednesday.

Lost water is not odd

The Times Union has a story this morning of lost water in local city water systems. (It comes after the Dispatch ran its own story on the subject, here.) Where Saratoga Springs easily loses up to 20% of its water in leakage, the story says, Albany loses up to 35% of the water it processes and sends off to homes and businesses. The town of Hudson does not even track its losses since they do not meter but just charge a flat fee to consumers.

“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”

State Police and local law enforcement will be out in force through Labor Day weekend as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign to prevent drugged and drunk driving. The national enforcement period started on Wednesday, Aug. 13, and runs through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, a press release from the New York State Police says.

Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols by State Police and local law enforcement agencies during this holiday weekend. Troopers will be using both marked State Police vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement (CITE) vehicles as part of this crackdown to more easily identify motorists who are violating the law.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation remind motorists that their “Have a Plan” mobile app is available for Apple, Droid and Windows smartphones. The app enables New Yorkers to locate and call a taxi service and program a designated driver list.
