The ABC News affiliate in New York City yesterday highlighted the plight of “dozens” of cannabis dispensaries in the city that are too close to schools and may have to move. The trouble, though, is that it was the Office of Cannabis Management that misunderstood the law when approving retail locations, taking the distance from the door of the school to the door of the dispensaries. State law says that the property line of the school must be at least 500 feet from the property line of the dispensary. The Albany Business Review story on this is here.

Religious freedom and education

WAMC spoke with Daniel Morton-Bentley, the general counsel and deputy commissioner for legal affairs for the New York State Education Department, about the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that will likely let parents take their kids out of course work they don’t agree with on religious grounds. Morton-Bentley says, among other things, that LGBTQ+ education and religious education is not a “zero-sum” idea.
