The “Morning Call” wakes you up with the top stories from the Dispatch and other news outlets that affect Saratoga.

Yaddo’s Open House in Sept.

Officials with Yaddo, the Saratoga Springs artists retreat, tell us that their Open House is not annual, but that this year will be spectacular (the most recent tour was in 2021 and had to be pulled back because of the COVID pandemic). The retreat’s gardens are open to outside visitors through most of the year, but the grand estate of the Katrina and Spencer Trask, and their 400 acres, comes along only every-so-often. The tour will include the mansion, the West House, some of the writers cabins, bedrooms, grounds and more.

If you go:

  • Yaddo, 312 Union Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866

  • Sept. 27, tickets will run $75-$85 for the tour.

  • Sept. 26, VIP tour is $250.

An ornament featuring the Trask mansion windvane is for sale at $25.

Waiting in and emergency

Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo and St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany were among the top 10 worst in the nation for the longest wait times during emergency room visits last year, according to a story in the Times Union. The wait at St. Peter’s lasts six hours and 40 minutes, on average. That includes their time spent waiting and also receiving treatment. Some of the wait is attributed to continued staffing issues, post-COVID pandemic and the complexity of the ailments that arrive in the Emergency Department.

Second person charged in dog case

A second person was arrested in the animal abuse case that saw as many as 55 dogs living in terrible conditions, the Times Union is reporting. The person, believed to be the girlfriend of the man originally arrested, is accused of “overdriving, torturing and injuring animals,” the story says.

Aviation Mall may see ownership change

The Aviation Mall’s foreclosure proceedings are over, and the debt on the property was sold to a Rockland County real estate investor, the Albany Business Review says. The Queensbury mall was placed in receivership last May and is likely to see new ownership this year.

Brown wins Whitney

Chad Brown had a milestone win at the Saratoga Race Course, Saturday, with jockey Falvien Prat aboard Sierra Leone to take the Whitney, the Times Union is reporting. Sierra Leone beat Highland Falls by more than a length. The horse had made it to the podium but not the winners circle in three races at Saratoga last year. Brown, from Mechanicville, was joined by his parents and other family members during the race, the story says.

Below the fold: Public media budget woes. Horses euthanized. Weather, traffic, stocks and more.
