Hey, Dispatchers,
One of my favorite podcasts is Search Engine, either because I’m genuinely curious or because, in another lifetime, I was a tireless investigative reporter. Of course, you probably have to be one to succeed at the other.
Anyway, the podcast attempts to answer seemingly unanswerable questions, from the consequential to the completely ridiculous.
In some alternate universe where I have unlimited resources, a team of reporters, and an audience clamoring for Saratoga-focused, we-answer-everything journalism, I already know my first assignment:
Who is the voice with the heavy New York accent screaming at us from downtown crosswalks?
Everyone talks about him. I mean, the guy is hilarious.
Which made it even funnier to stumble across a TikTok thread devoted to this exact mystery — and somehow more satisfying that nobody swooped in with, “Oh, I know that guy.”
Let’s see what Saratoga had to say. (And look at some possible clues…)

The crosswalk guy
@gabylacorte25 Like the most NY thing ever
Saratoga has taken over TikTok.
Or at least our TikToks. “Is your feed suddenly all Saratoga?” came up at happy hour recently, and everyone knew exactly what we meant.
Restaurants. Tourists. Downtown. Local characters. The algorithm has apparently decided we want to see ourselves reflected back at us.
Which is how I found tourist Gaby LaCorte’s hysterical reaction to one of downtown’s most recognizable mysteries: the heavily accented voice yelling at us from the crosswalks.
And, as so often happens on TikTok, the comments were worth their weight in digital gold:
Moved here from downstate and it makes me feel at home
I’ve been cracking up about this since the day they were installed!
my favorite 😂 I can't help but say it over and over as I cross the street
Let’s talk about the strong “WAIT” “WAIT” everytime you hit the cross button 😂😂😂
I work at piper boutique and this is my white noise
I laugh every single time
I hear this in my dreams
And, Saratoga … there were three potential clues.
Omg it’s like this in Rochester too bahahaha
I just moved to Elmira from Saratoga and I swear it’s the same voice here too!!!
thanks Mario Cuomo! haha we always joke about this!
Does this mean our guy was part of a state-wide project? How do we find him, Dispatchers?
