DEC negotiates with potential owner of Whitney estate in the Adks.
The head of New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation tells the Adirondack Explorer that her office is in talks with developer Shawn Todd, chairman of Texas-based Todd Interests, to keep him from over-developing the 36,600-acre property that he is pursuing, the Adirondack Explorer reported earlier in the week. Whitney Park had been owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney and his wife Marylou Whitney, Saratoga Springs’ most famous couple. Marylou Whitney’s widower John Hendrickson inherited the estate.
Another Adirondack tract protected
The Adirondack Land Trust and Paul Smith’s College have agreed to a $4.1 million easement that will permanently preserve nearly 3,000 acres of the college’s visitor’s center property. The lands in north-central Adirondacks have served as an outdoor classrooms for students and visitors, a story in the Adirondack Explorer says.

At this hour: Traffic, weather and the markets
Weather
A warm and sunny Fourth of July, according to the National Weather Service’s Albany office. Enjoy it!
Traffic
According to Google Maps, traffic is largely clear in the Dispatch’s readership area.
Premarket trading
The NASDAQ is up by 1% in premarket trading (U.S. markets are closed today), and the S&P500 and Dow are up by about 0.75% each, according to numbers from Marketwatch, but President Donald Trump is threatening countries with 70% tariffs, putting jitters in a market that saw strong employment numbers (jobs up by more than 140,000 and unemployment steady) earlier this week. According to the WSJ, fewer people are looking for work (which drives down the unemployment rate) while U.S. companies are pushing to increase domestic manufacturing (an effect of the widespread, high tariffs that Trump has implemented).
